The Samsung C24F390 is a 24″ monitor who’s stand out feature is a relatively strong curve. There is also a grown up 27″ version of this one if 24″ seems too small for your taste. These models from Samsung have some of the deepest curves available on the market, measuring at 1800R. If you’d really rather push the boat out then you have a further model to consider, the more premium C27F591.

I’ve not seen a 24″ curved monitor up close and personal so it’s hard to comment on whether it works at this size. But that said, it really looks the part and has some decent specs on paper.

Build Quality

The C24F390 scores well on design. Curved screens just look kinda cool whether you feel they add anything to the experience or not. Add in those super slim bezels, a slim panel and a touch of black gloss and this is a monitor you won’t want to hide away. Whether or not the curve is of any benefit is still hotly debated around the net and perhaps it’s just something you’ll love or hate. In theory, by wrapping around your field of vision you should feel more immersed within games.

Connectivity is handled by VGA and HDMI ports. This should be fine if you intend on hooking it up to your PC but if you are looking for more complicated setups you might find this limiting. This model has a 75×75 VESA mounting attachment for those that want to ditch the included stand for a more flexible supporting arm.

Performance

This model isn’t marketed as a gaming monitor, the VA panel is not traditionally known for it’s game credentials and it is limited to 60hz refresh rate. But, it does include FreeSync which helps to give smoother game play and tear free images. This makes it ideal for someone who doesn’t have an all powerful gaming rig capable of maxing out 60frames per second on ultra settings. FreeSync kicks in to give you smoother images when you are hovering below this 60fps max.

VA panels have their benefits, they are designed to give a better image quality with superior viewing angles when compared to the cheaper and more common TN based panels. If you’re fed up with the washed up look of these screens then VA, or IPS, are the way to go.

Features such as Eye Saver Mode and Samsung Flicker Free are supposed to give you more a comfortable viewing experience, as I have not tried it out for real I can’t tell you if that’s the case. I’m slightly weary of these extras, they sometimes sound like they are there for marketing purposes but on the other hand if they do live up to their claims you should enjoy those longer gaming sessions.

Samsung have put together a new range of ultra curved monitors that promise to provide you with a unique immersive gaming experience. I’ll have to be honest, I’ve never owned a curved monitor so I am unable to comment on whether these monitors deliver on that promise but I have to admit the Samsung C27F591 does look like one attractive looking display.

The C27F591 is gamer friendly thanks to the included gamer mode, and more importantly, it is FreeSync compatible for those who have an appropriate AMD graphics card to connect up to it. FreeSync helps provide us gamers with super smooth tear free gaming even when your PC is struggling to keep up with the on screen action.

It does seem fairly pricey at launch, but we hope the price will drop down to become more competitive. Whilst this is a stylish looking monitor and one of the most curved models we’ve seen it is only a 1080p display and that might not be enough to convince you to pay a premium over the ever increasing number of game ready competitors out there.

There is a cheaper model to consider, the CF27F390. It looks very similar on the surface with the only obvious feature difference being the lack of speakers and different physical design. The Samsung press release does mention superior colour range on the C27F591.

Build Quality

The key feature of the Samsung C27F591 must be its 1,800mm radius curve in comparison to the more typical wider 2,400mm-radius curve seen in existing monitors. The design breaks the typical mold, it has a rounded base, satisfyingly thin left, right and top bezel with a silver metallic plastic finish throughout. The overall look is stylish and uncluttered.

Setup is made easier thanks to a control joystick positioned on the rear. This all sounds good but unfortunately it loses out when it comes to adjustability. The C27F591 is stuck at a fixed height, the taller amongst us may what to place the stand on a a couple of books to raise it up – which does nothing for the aesthetics of this stylish monitor!

There are built in speakers, but don’t get too excited. If you have any interest in high fidelity music you won’t be using them. However, if you like having speakers to hand for playing the odd bleeps and blips that Windows throws out at you then you’ll be glad they are there.

Performance

The Samsung is a 60hz 1080p monitor which means you wouldn’t really categorise it as a gaming monitor. That said, thanks to its 4ms response time it is not slouch when it comes to reproducing fast moving graphics. It also includes the FreeSync adaptive synchronisation technology which eliminates screen tearing thus providing with a clear unbroken image during moments of high action. So whilst it is not specifically designed for games, it will do a good job.

The Samsung uses a VA panel, typically most monitors we see here are either TN or IPS based, this technology provides deeper blacks and punchy colours but as usual you can’t have it all as viewing angles are slightly restricted. But the VA technology delivers vibrant punchy colours on the C27F591 right out of the box. Professional reviewers have scored the colour accuracy highly so you can be sure of faithful reproduction. There are a number of inbuilt configurations, for example Eye Saver and Cinema mode, which will pre-set the monitor to appropriate levels of brightness etc.

As predicted, there is an issue with viewing angles. It should be OK when sat directly in front of the monitor at your desk, but you don’t have to move your head far before the colour accuracy begins to deteriorate. I guess you can’t have it all.

Samsung C27F390 Review

The Samsung CF390 boasts the much coveted title of being the world’s most curved screen, so if you don’t like curved screens – look away now! The C27F390 is part of a range that promises maximum immersion whilst being easy on your eyes. The monitor is spectacularly slim, just 11.9mm, which as Samsung are keen to point out is the width of a ball point pen!

Curved monitors are right on trend at the moment with a number of manufactures adding curvy screens to their repertoire. The idea is that the corners of the screen are brought a little closer to your eye line allowing you to focus more easily thanks to the view hugging your natural line of vision in a way a flat screen never will. At least that’s the theory, I’ve yet to test one in the flesh and we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

The monitor is gamer friendly, not only thanks to it’s gorgeous curves but all because it support AMD’s FreeSync technology, paving the way for stutter free smooth gameplay. It’s a 27″ HD screen and features a standard 60Hz refresh rate. If you are looking for high res or 144Hz refresh then you won’t find it here unfortunately.

It is worth noting that there is a smaller version of this model, the C24F390 and if you are looking to spend a little more, then you might want to investigate the C27F591 too. It’s not especially clear what the differences is between the C27F390 vs C27F591 but the latter has speakers, greater colour range and costs more. If you have more information on what makes them different please comment below.

Build Quality

The overall design is neat enough, slim bezels, rounded base and a typical black glossy finish. Round the back connectivity seems limited with just one HDMI and VGA port available, not so good if you want to hook up more than your PC to this screen. There is also a headphone socket but no USB ports. Overall it presents a stylish look that I’d be proud to display in my home office.

The Samsung has a 1,800mm curvature which means a deeper more natural curve than competitors right now. Some critics have claimed that some monitors are not curved enough to make any real impact so Samsung are going a step further than most to give you a better picture. It comes with a simple yet sturdy stand, given the curved nature of the screen you’ll need to position it directly in front of you anyway, it wouldn’t make sense to include the ability to pivot 90 degrees!

There are no speakers included on this model but there are headphone sockets which are helpful for plugging in your own headphones or desk based speaker setup. You’ll probably get better results that way anyway.

Performance

The C27F390 is not branded as a gaming monitor, but that doesn’t mean it can’t keep up with your fast paced action games. It has a couple of things going for it. For a start it has a VA panel with a non too shabby 4ms response time. This means you’ll get clear images during high action sequences, no nasty ghosting.

The VA panel differs from the more common TN and IPS screens in that they provide much darker blacks but also they’re known for providing punchy accurate colours. Samsung are known for their high quality displays and owners report back vibrant out of the box performance. Professional objective tests also return good results with reviewers citing the near perfect colour reproduction and uniform back lighting. On the down side, viewing angles are slightly inferior but should not present a problem when the screen is viewed head on.

This model also includes FreeSync, now this is a technology designed with gamers in mind so this is good news. FreeSync aims to eliminate tearing thus giving you a smooth stable image. You’ll need a compatible AMD graphics card to make use of this feature but the monitor will still work with an older card if you plan to upgrade at a later date.

I’ve read different opinions on whether the curve is a good thing for gamers but looking through owner feedback the general consensus seems to be that it does improve the level of immersion. Let us know your experiences in the comments below.
