The Samsung U28E850R is part of the series 8 range of high resolution monitors aimed at professionals. This is the 28″ model, we’ve covered the 24″ screen here. Note that this one uses a TN panel, whereas the smaller model uses PLS technology, presumably this is to keep costs down.
Samsung describe this display as a professional UHD monitor, promising 8 million pixel image detail, exact colour reproduction and a smooth fully adjustable, premium design stand. But this isn’t just for work, the TN panel is suited to fast response gaming and it comes with the FreeSync adaptive synchronisation technology to give gamers a smooth tear free image.
Samsung have produced a stylish looking display with clean lines and a smart black finish. The monitor is fully adjustable with tilt and swivel functions built into the stand. It is also has VESA 100 x 100 compatibility so it is fully mountable should you need that extra flexibility. Samsung have branded this as a professional monitor you have to admit that it looks the part. To game faster red stripes down the side of this one.
The connectors are tucked away neatly round the back and are kept neat and tidy thanks to an integrated cable holder. You get 2 HDMI ports, a DisplayPort and also a mini display port. The monitor’s only sound capabilities is a headphone socket so bear that in mind if you are dependent on built in speakers.
The U28E850R offers super fast gamer friendly response times as low as 1ms, this is down to the TN panel technology. Unfortunately TN panels do have some draw backs, they have a limited viewing range which means that colour accuracy diminishes when viewed from unusual angles. Not a problem if you plan to be sitting square on. The overall colour reproduction on this display is reportedly excellent, remember that Samsung have professionals in mind.
But that doesn’t mean they have forgotten about gamers. This is a FreeSync monitor so assuming your graphics card is compatible you’ll be able to turn on the adaptive synchronisation technology for tear free smooth gaming. You will need a high end card to get good frame rates on a 4k screen though. But later generation cards will be able to handle high resolutions more smoothly so if you are buying for the long term I wouldn’t let this put you off.
Should I buy the Samsung U28E850R?An affordable professional quality monitor with 4k capabilities and FreeSync to keep the games running smoothly. The TN panel might put some off but it does keep the cost down. If you are having some doubts about this purchase then why not read some real owner reviews and see what other buyers think.
